Skiing has played an important role in the life of Bardonecchia since the early days of skiing and soon became clear that the resort was ideal for the new sport. In 1909 the first Italian ski championships were held here and in the same years was built the first ski jump . The jump was named after the Norwegian brothers, Harald and Trigwe Smith, had broken the world record by jumping 43 and 40 metres respectively.
In 1935 the first Colomion ski lift was built and many newspapers and reporters wrote pages and pages about ski competitions and "daytrips to the snow" that were organized at the resort.
Now you can go skiing across 100 km of runs, 35 of which have artificial snow-making machines; there are 21 lifts carrying up to 30,000 people per hour; there are bars and restaurants on the slopes, ski & accessory hire and 4 ski and snowboard schools. In addition there is free parking, first aid, a railway station and indoor swimming pool. Bardonecchia had also host all the snowboarding competitions during Turin 2006 Winter Olympics Games
